IELTS Overall Score Calculator

Enter your four band scores and get your overall band, rounded the official way.

The average of the four bands is rounded to the nearest half band: .25 goes up to .5 and .75 goes up to the next whole band. The same rule is used for Academic and General Training.

FAQ

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?

The four bands (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) are added up and divided by four. The average is then rounded to the nearest half band: .25 rounds up to .5, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example, 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.0 average 6.25, so the overall band is 6.5. An average of 6.125 rounds down to 6.0.

Is the overall band calculated differently for Academic and General Training?

No. Both tests use the same averaging and rounding rule. Only the Reading and Writing content differs, and the Reading raw score is converted to a band with a different chart for each test.

Do I need the same band in every skill?

No. Your overall band is just the average, so a strong skill can balance a weaker one. However, many universities, employers and immigration programmes also ask for a minimum in each skill (for example, 6.5 overall with no skill below 6.0), so check the exact rules of the place you are applying to.

Can I retake just one skill if one band is low?

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you retake a single skill in some countries and test centres, and it is not accepted by every institution. Ask your test centre and your institution before booking.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

Test Report Forms are usually valid for two years from the test date. Some institutions or visa programmes set their own limits, so check before you rely on an older result.
